My middle school students come from a rural area in South Dakota. We live in a farming and ranching community. Students learn science and social studies in my classroom. We have a very small science department. Many of these students have had limited science exposure when they come to my classroom.
Students come into my classroom ready to learn and explore.
They are very enthusiastic! But our seating situation is in need of an update. Our chairs are beginning to fall apart and are too low for our tables. Science is very collaborative and hands-on. I'd love students to have wobble stool seating to work collaboratively and to be able to move around and work with all their classmates on activities!
My Project
Science is best learned via collaboration with other students. I would like to make our science classroom different from an ordinary classroom for my students to participate in hands-on activities including many STEM projects. This project will also allow for comfortable mobile seating options for my students.
While having fun exploring science topics and conducting science experiments, students will be more mobile and engaged with wobble stools.
My goal is to have my middle school students fully engaged at all times by providing them with stools and seating that allows them to move throughout the classroom and engage with their classmates. These stools will be used by 130 students each day - for a total of 5,000 hours a year!
In Earth science, we have a composting project we utilize all year long. The students feed and bed the worms each week. They harvest the soil. In life science, we raise monarch butterflies from eggs. These types of projects require mobile and flexible seating.
