My students need the comfy floor seat to complete a collaborative coding area in the classroom where they can use the coding file folders to prepare for coding as well as explore the “little bits” together.
“To be leaders in technology to share our learning and to spread kindness to others.” That’s my second grade class’ mission statement. These empowered leaders thrive on self-discovery, goal setting, and collaboration. Throughout the day, the students take on roles and responsibilities to make the classroom run smoothly. Whether it’s extending a science concept in their own way, or innovating a math game’s purpose or rules to fit their learning target or goal, they seek out challenges. These kids love learning!
My Project
My students love to talk and to wonder about the world together so I’m always looking for ways to give my students social/emotional opportunities to grow! Wondering is a skill that supports several key learning standards in second grade such as asking and answering questions, adding to discussions, and comprehending text. “Little bits” bring out lots of wondering: why, what if, how?! The coding file folders are a resource to support students seeking information independently. I’m looking at coding as an opportunity to support my students with concepts such as sequence and multi-step directions which are tricky for second grade mathematicians. Taking on a more personalized approach to learning, I want to offer my students a space and materials that will engage and empower them. its inspiring for them and for me! The skills gained from wondering, testing, innovating the little bits together direxrly correlate to math, reading, writing, science, listening and speaking skills and standards! Win- win!
