Being in a low income and high poverty school district exposes my students to challenges in and outside of the classroom. School should be a fun, exciting, and a safe place for them to learn. My students come into the classroom and are excited to learn while having access to appropriate materials that they will see outside of school. Making my classroom engaging and providing my students with the materials to be successful to learn is crucial. The education environment should promote learning, engage creativity, enhance collaboration, and motivate students to learn from errors. All of this will expose my students to skills they will be using when they leave my mathematics classroom to enter communities and businesses.
My Project
Within my mathematics classroom I encourage collaboration. Students sit in teams and are expected to work through material together. Each student has a role within their group to be sure their group is functioning properly. This way students discuss concepts, use trial and error to explore new concepts together, and best of all together they learn what does not work to try something new.
This model gives students a chance to become a leader, a chance to try something new, and a chance to discuss their own ideas with others.
By incorporating whiteboard tables into my classroom I can enhance the collaborative nature by allowing students who benefit from drawing or writing out their ideas a collaborative space. From a teacher perspective I will be able to monitor student work and team work more effectively and consistently as the work will be printed larger and bolder as I rotate around the room.
Lastly, I believe this addition to my classroom will encourage all students to participate in their own learning. I believe whiteboard tables would add an element of "fun" to my mathematics classroom as more students would be willing to develop their ideas and skills.
