My Students

My students are elementary English as a Second Language students in a rural, public school in North Carolina. Most of my students speak Spanish at home, and all of them are eager to learn. They love to wiggle and move, and we rarely have a day when they're expected to sit still through an entire lesson. They love group work and collaborating with classmates to create something special. Usually, you'll find them spread out on the floor working or huddled around a group of chairs.

Like all children, my students love to work together with partners and friends.

Writing assignments are so much more engaging when students are allowed to peer edit as they go. I've noticed an improvement in their writing scores, and they use high-level vocabulary more readily when they can work in small groups.

My Project

My students would benefit from flexible seating areas in our class. We have some already, but when those are in use, there is no where for kids to work. We also need a new classroom rug, because the one we have is dirty and ragged at the edges. Kids like to spread out and write on clipboards, but the rug we have isn't very inviting.

Some low, comfy chairs and a rug would give students a space to work in groups of two or three.

The chairs I selected are appropriate for students of many sizes and age ranges. A kindergartener or a fifth grader could sit comfortably and work. The rug I selected has letters and numbers to reinforce basic phonics skills and letter names with my English Learner students.
