Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school in a small rural community. My students are overflowing with creativity and curiosity but are often unsure of how to express themselves. Only a few have had the opportunity to visit a gallery or museum even though they live only a few miles away from a flourishing art scene. Many of my students haven't been outside of their own neighborhoods. Many of our students face many challenges economically, academically, and personally. They are eager to have a voice in this world and have a limited concept of all of the possibilities available to them.
Each one of my students has a story to tell and a vision to share.
I strongly believe the arts have the potential to give my students a voice that might otherwise be silenced.
My Project
Students will explore the relationship and juxtaposition of peoples' relationship with nature in an urban environment. The Kwik Draw Projector will be used to project a large image onto the wood rounds. Students will work on the rounds individually using mixed media including acrylic paint, collage and drawing materials. The gel medium will be used for collage aspects.
The installation will include student generated imagery of the urban experience in each small natural round.
The rounds are natural cuts of logs and will communicate a nature vibe. The large image projected will also reference nature and will be voted on by the students in order to communicate a message of choosing.
