Many of the students in my classroom come from low income, high poverty homes. Social skills and community building is learned in the classroom. Our community is made up of a diverse culture of learners from various backgrounds. We are located directly off the main interstate, which brings challenges of transient students. We are also located in the center of several manufacturing industries where many of our parents are employed. My classroom students tend to be more active and need constant movement, as well as low readers, all who benefit from flexible seating. I promote diversity within the classroom and teach each child that their uniqueness helps create our classroom community.
My Project
It’s a partnership between teachers, students, and parents. The My Robotic Pet, Solar Rovers, Simple Machines STEM Experiment and Model Building Kits, and SmartLab Aftershock Earthquake Labtm Kits will be used in collaboration stations designed by a student committee to welcome and involve everyone from parents, teachers, siblings, and students in a STEM-Infused parent night. It will create a learning community to better support students and their learning in the future, addressing multiple subjects in one night of entertaining education. Creating an environment and learning community where my young students feel empowered to take chances is critical to a successful year.
