My students need 1 small group learning table and 3 stability ball chairs for an accessible and comfortable, collaborative learning space.

“Education...needs to be transformed. The key is not to standardize education, but to personalize it…”- Ken Robinson. We are on this journey to personalize learning. This project will allow me, to begin to transform the physical environment of my classroom, and to meet individual needs of students.
My incredible, active 6th-grade students, in Charleston, SC, learn both English and science, in our room.
The students are diverse. There are a variety of cultural backgrounds, many live in poverty, and there are a plethora of unique learning styles and levels. Despite the varied backgrounds, they come to class with a shared vision: to be prepared, have fun, and make it to 7th-grade. We have built a classroom climate that encourages students to ask questions and make mistakes. We are constantly trying new things, and are beginning to personalize learning. Students have a choice in activities, and are able to work at their own pace. My students are working to master the content and skill standards, and they are not moving on, until they reach mastery. They are incredible to watch, and I learn from them daily! Despite challenges they face, they come to school, every day, excited to learn new things. In addition to preparing for 7th-grade, we are also working to prepare for the future.
I began to personalize learning, for my students, this year. Before the learning was personalized, we created a classroom environment, where the students felt safe and comfortable to learn. We have a code of cooperation and a shared vision: although we may get there in different ways, we have a common goal. This project will allow me to begin transforming the physical space, to better meet the individual needs of students, with a new table and stability ball chairs. It will also support collaboration between students, while allowing for a bit of movement! As the teacher, I will be able to work with them in small groups, for re-teaching or extension. In ELA, students are practicing different mediums of writing, such as personal narratives, and short stories. In science, they are exploring the topics of plants, animals, weather, and energy. I envision the students using the new collaborative furniture, for peer review of writing and for science explorations. With personalized learning, the possibilities of its use are endless!
Our current physical space does not begin to showcase the amazing things we have accomplished.
This project will make a vast difference for the students. I believe the physical environment of the classroom is just as important as the cultural environment. Students will be excited to learn, in a comfortable and collaborative space. Not to mention, my 6th-graders are active! Giving them the ability to move, while learning will increase concentration and decrease classroom distractions.
