As a teacher serving in a low-income school district with a higher than average ratio of students with disabilities, it has become a necessity to find innovative ways to engage students in learning.
Our students lack the opportunities to engage in project-based, authentic learning that fosters independent thinking and creativity.
In addition, our economically disadvantaged students with disabilities subgroups are consistently underperforming their peers. Our goal is to increase their engagement in school and content and foster a deeper level of thinking in order to give them the skills to be successful when they graduate.
My Project
These whiteboard tables will allow more students to collaborate and problem solve efficiently and create a better STEM environment.
Students will utilize the IF/THEN website to research careers and learn about women in STEM.
The whiteboard tables will allow them to brainstorm and collaborate with one another. Each group will have to research a career from the IF/THEN website. They will create graphic organizers and notes on their whiteboard desks. They will then jigsaw out and take a desk with them to share with the rest of the group.
In addition, the stool included provides flexible seating and is specialized with a bin to hold equipment for group activities. The bin will hold dry erase markers as well as other supplies for the collaboration station for their research and design work while engaging in the IF/THEN Collection.
