My Students

My students live in a rural county in Tennessee where poverty and unemployment rates are extremely high.

My students come from a high poverty, rural area and financial constraints often prevent participation in school academics.

Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status.

These things may prevent them from getting ahead in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". We take for granted the access we have to library books and other resources. I hope to inspire my students to collaborate on projects and to continue to build college and career skills.

My Project

The elevated work space will provide students a comfortable space to collaborate on projects in the library. Currently, no open space is available for this type of work. The former student meeting space is being converted to a testing center. There will be a small corner remaining for student space. These tables will pair nicely with the tall chairs received in a previous project.

The flexible seating options will allow them to feel more comfortable and welcomed while working in small groups.

A variety of flexible seating options will allow for students to choose their own work space and support their choice in a space within the library that best supports their collaboration, focus, and productivity.
