I work in an immersion program and have a lot of students who work hard to learn another language. These students have been studying Spanish since kindergarten and many are very passionate about improving their language. My kids (yes, I consider all of them as my kids) are motivated, interested and are a great look into our future.
My students are always looking for ways to improve themselves and their communities.
I have students who go above and beyond for each other and their classmates. They want to be a part of a better world and make a difference with what they learn about in the program. They want to create cultures and communities of understanding and inclusion.
My Project
I want to create this project to help my students be able to move around and have opportunities to have more discussion with peers about the Math lesson or grammar concepts. My biggest challenge in an immersion classroom is to have students stay in the second language. By having no desks, yet supplies with my students (in an elementary classroom) located behind them with their seat sacks, students would able to collaborate and use their language in a more aplicable way. According to Vygotsky, learning is the internalization of the social interaction. Vygotsky also highlighted peer interaction action, termed "conversation" and ways that it leads to student learning. (Young, Tedick p137) This interaction and conversation helps students better learn, retain and use the language in meaningful contexts. These students will be able to move around with their materials more, for our math and language arts lessons and have their materials for collaboration.
I want to bring the idea of higher learning into my classroom through the use of more flexible seating with the use of these seat bags that will hold my student's personal and group materials.
This is the start of my process for flexible seating as my school has run out of flexible furniture for new teachers. I could put my students at tables with groups and have more learning centers that involve more flexibility and diversity for my lessons.
