Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For many of my students, our classroom provides the most reliable, and constant environment of their day. Routines and expectations are clear and predictable. Classmates are accepting and helpful. This is where they can feel brave enough to take risks with their learning.
I teach in a small school with a diverse population in which many students receive free or reduced lunch, and many also participate in a backpack food program.
We are surrounded by larger, more affluent school districts, so it is crucial that my students become strong problem-solvers and creative thinkers to stand out from the rest!
My Project
When you walk into my classroom, you can feel the energy of the students' engagement in their learning. Students are working in pairs or small groups, at desks, tables, or on the floor. Desk and table surfaces are almost always covered with Dry Erase marker notes, diagrams, and examples. My students are always permitted to self-select where in the room they work, and with whom they work.
Your contribution to this project will give my 4th graders access to comfortable collaboration spaces, rather than sitting only at a desk or on the floor, and will enable them to easily share their ideas and explain their solutions with their classmates on markerboard table tops.
My students need a rug for the back of the classroom and 2 dry erase tables to help them develop the skills necessary to be responsible, deliberate, and collaborative learners. Most of my lesson units are designed for students to have choices: which format to use for notes, which activities to do to practice new skills, how to demonstrate what they've learned. Within this environment of "Choice," my students move around the classroom freely, deciding where they want to work. Currently, students often find themselves sitting on the floor of the classroom or crowding around desk clusters trying to work together.
I'd like to be able to provide my class with better options for work areas.
Your donation will provide my students with a rug area and two collaborative table areas within the classroom to work with other students to learn, share ideas, and grow.
