My Students

Our school is a comprehensive high school in San Francisco’s Sunset District that is home to about 2,100 students a year. We are an ethnically diverse school, and 46% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. Our kids are enthusiastic about learning and make every day interesting and full of awesome questions and debates.

The students who take biotechnology are usually interested in the field and the concepts and practices we engage in.

Many of them elect to take the 2nd year class and then go into research after engaging with the class.

My Project

Our high school is fortunate to have a fully set up lab space to do real lab-based science. Unfortunately, most of the equipment we do have are donations and many are very old. Our freezer, which we use to store samples, reactions and reagents is now 21 years old and really needs to be replaced. The freezer is required for storage of many different items, and we would not be able to do almost any of our lab sequences without them. Our district and school site do not help us with purchases for our lab, so we rely on donors and grants.
