My scholars are IB students at an urban inner-city school. Our curriculum is both diverse and rigorous. We strive to provide high-quality education to students from all walks of life.
My classroom is project-based, and scholars lead their own learning with guidance and examples from both me and other professionals in the field.
Fulfilling goals set by them, for them, helps my scholars learn the importance of independence and free-thinking.
My students are special because of their universal drive to achieve rigorous academic goals for college and beyond. They are public-school students who have opted into an extremely demanding college preparatory program. About 60% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price meals, and our student body represents a diverse group of black, white, Latino, multiracial, and Asian students from all neighborhoods of a large city in Indiana.
My Project
Ta-Nehisi Coates, in his book Between the World and Me, speaks about his high school French class: "I wish someone had told me what that class really was - a gate to some other blue world." With this in mind, I endeavor to make my Spanish classroom a gate for my students to the wide world around them. One of the tools that I utilize to make Spanish seem relevant is classroom decoration.
I want my students to see that, regardless of what they look like, there are people who look like them who speak Spanish and use it to enrich their lives.
I have planned a lesson that will include Hispanic role models that embody the IB learner profile traits. I want students to research these diverse role models and make posters about them. They will then laminate these posters and hang them in the classroom. I know that these posters will become destroyed if I do not laminate them. I would like to purchase a cold laminator to share with my fellow staff members at SHS so that we have the tools we need to make our classes vibrant, engaging, and relevant through compelling classroom decorations.
