"Gifted students represent a vital resource that has unlimited potential. We need to make sure that these exceptional young people have the support and services they need to be successful"(Chuck Grassley). For this reason, I am inspired and motivated. I teach a group of 7th grade gifted and talented students at a middle school in Colorado. They are a creative, inquisitive, innovative crew that love to learn! Because of their zest for learning, finding engaging, challenging curriculum and experiences is crucial! We spend a lot of class time exploring topics of intrigue, discussing real-world challenges, and problem-solving.
The best quality of this group of students is that they elect to participate in unique learning experiences.
It helps that they are surrounded by like-minded peers, people that understand the difficulties faced by the gifted population. In our class they feel like they belong, that they aren't different than their peers; they are a part of a community that understands and embraces them. It's truly a special group, and I anticipate the incredible impact that they have on our society.
My Project
Remote learning is definitely a challenge, but there are a lot of unique ways to get students excited and engaged with learning. Cold Case 101 will offer students the opportunity to engage collaboratively via Zoom, and in Breakout Rooms in order to practice critical thinking skills and work toward our future Mock Trial Cases.
The best part about this project is that I will be just as engaged as my students are in solving the crimes; it will truly promote collaboration and demonstrate the value of multiple perspectives in solving real-life mysteries!
