My students need these items such as cups, and coffee to help fund raise for our program and learn job, communication and social skills by serving coffee to students and staff in the building.
Our students in the Mild Cognitively Impaired program normally start the day off very tired, frustrated and frequently come in late. Due to their impairments, we need to focus on practicing many skills in a variety of ways. Our favorite quote when they enter the room is this one: "The expert in anything was once a beginner."
Our school is in an urban setting, and families experience many difficulties in buying essentials for daily living.
We look at our "class store" as a very positive way to reinforce the student behavior and specific skills they may need to focus on to become more independent people in society. They work towards earning money from two CI teachers a week and then use the money to purchase items in the store. This aligns precisely with our more functional curriculum.
My Project
Our main focus with our students is to be appropriate and independent. We can think of no better way to practice these skills than a real-world setting. By having the variety of K-Cups, Dixie coffee cups and hot chocokate donated we will free up more money in our budget to take these much needed field trips while teaching the kids how to run a "coffee store" by taking orders and paying for coffee. This will just be another way the students are practicing money skills, social skills and being more independent. The students will be in charge of taking any coffee orders to staff and other students in our building.
They will be in charge of taking orders, making change and having positive interactions with others while selling the coffee.
The funds we receive from the coffee program will also help us purchase items we need to purchase for weekly cooking, bake sales and other projects in our classroom kitchen!
