Coffee Table to Horseshoe! If the 'Shoe Fits, Sit at It!
My students need a horseshoe table for small-group learning. Working closely with the teacher can boost students' baseline knowledge and enhance beginning reading skills.
Kindergarten is the BEST grade to teach! We get to sing, draw, paint, get great hugs and sweet compliments ("You're the BEST teacher in the world!"). But these kids need to learn...some of them their own names! We need a group table to practice, learn and work closely together to ensure success!
My students are the children of lower-income, working class families.
Every student receives free breakfast and 70% of my class receives free lunch.
My students are full of personality - they love school and honestly it is the most stable place in most of their little lives. These kinders come to school every day excited for what they will learn. Some cannot write their own names. It is my job to help them become readers by the end of the school year.
The school is an older, smaller school with approximately 450 students. I was provided 4 rectangular tables with mix-matched finishes. When you only have four tables in the classroom they are all in use throughout the entire day. I have nowhere to sit with a small group to provide the skills practice they require. I currently use a coffee table which is too small and awkward for the group and the learning resources we use.
My Project
A small-group table offers a place to teach all of my little ones who need additional, intensive intervention to boost their baseline skills.
To get students to the end goal of being first grade ready, I need to work in close proximity to them. This table will accommodate small groups of 4-6 students at a time and I will be able to reach each one of them for one-on-one instruction.
Donations to this project will provide my kindergartners with a place in our classroom to receive the individual interventions they need to improve their skills and grow as readers.
