I run a program for 8th graders through 12th graders that focuses on teaching academic skills through real-life experiences. Our goal is to increase students' independent living and vocational skills. As part of our vocational training, we run a coffee shop out of our classroom every Friday morning. We make coffee, hot chocolate, and tea for around 50 staff members and then hand deliver those drinks to their classrooms. This activity alone addresses a multitude of skills such as good hygiene, teamwork, following multi-step directions, communication, task quality and speed, reading, math computation, and socialization skills. We would really appreciate some help with supplies to make sure this experience can continue for our students.
My Project
Every Friday my students run a coffee shop to practice vocational skills to prepare them for the workforce after they graduate. We make coffee, hot chocolate, and tea for over 50 staff members and hand deliver their orders to the classroom. This activity allows us to work on a variety of skills that include hygiene, following multi-step directions, reading, writing, math, communication, and social skills. Right now we are using multiple coffee makers to keep up with orders so we need an industrial one. The markers are to write on the lids so we know where to deliver the drinks. The gloves are used to keep things sanitary and the cups are for orders.
