Introducing... The Panther Cafe! The Panther Cafe is a project that I started with my Philadelphia Special Education students a little over a year ago and it has had great success. Once a week, they make and sell coffee, tea, hot chocolate, baked goods, etc. to both staff and students. The cafe gives them the opportunity to work on a variety of vocational skills including interacting with customers, identifying the cost of items, collecting money, making change, inventorying, organizing, etc. Having the cafe in our school allows them to build these skills in an environment that they're comfortable in, so they can translate these skills to a community environment and eventually gain employment! While our cafe has been an incredible experience so far, we have been somewhat limited due to resources.
We now have the opportunity to expand the Panther Cafe into a realistic school-based coffee shop right here in Philadelphia!
This can give my students the chance to gain invaluable experience in all aspects of running a small business. This opportunity can be difficult to come by in a community environment for many of my students with complex needs. Building this in a school environment can give them the chance to showcase their full potential while building their confidence and increasing their employability skills, which could quite frankly, change their future.
My students are incredible humans with so much potential. Allowing us to expand our cafe will truly make it feel like a real work environment that will allow my students to continue to develop critical skills for their future and show their general education peers what they are capable of. We want the experience to benefit all students in our school by providing an inclusive space in the building where limitations no longer exist.
