My students need the supplies to start a Coffee Shop! This includes a coffee pot with filters, ground coffee, a variety of creamers and sugars, along with cups, lids and stirrers.
My students are those who function well below their grade level. Each one has one or more significant needs, but all are wonderful individuals. These students require daily life skill instruction and benefit from social interactions with their same-aged peers and other adults within the school setting.
As 1 of 3 teachers who are privileged to work so closely with these diverse students, it is important to continue to provide them with opportunities that enhance their skills.
Our school is located in a suburb of Chicago and is very diverse. Many students come from low-income families.
The students in the Life Skills Program vary in their abilities but all share in a love for school and hands-on experience. As a program, we incorporate academic and life skills into the classroom to allow for a diverse learning environment.
My Project
Students within the Life Skills Program need to be educated with hands-on experiences and opportunities. A "Coffee Cart" is a way to allow our students with significant disabilities to interact with different staff members throughout the school, while working on taking orders and perfecting money skills. Students will be supervised by staff members to make coffee from the 2 pot coffee maker that is being requested, along with the other necessary materials, such as cups, lids, stir sticks, sugar, and creamer. All of these things will be on a rolling cart that can easily be moved throughout the building to make deliveries to the staff members who have placed orders.
The donations from this project will help to start our "Coffee Cart" and jump-start our hands-on learning!
By implementing this opportunity into the classroom setting, students will have an authentic learning experience that incorporates social skills with money and marketing! I have seen this workshop implemented in other schools and cannot wait for my students to be given this unique opportunity!
