Imagine sitting through a class feeling overwhelmed because you do not understand the concepts being taught. Imagine not being able to follow 3-step directions because you can only remember the last step. What if you could not initiate a conversation with a peer or teacher? How would that make you feel? Language, whether it is understanding, usage, or social, is present in every aspect of our day. My students, with diagnoses like; Autism, Developmental Delay, Behavior Disorders, and Speech-language Impairment, face this struggle every day.
The students I work with come to school with many challenges that no person should face.
More than 80% of my students receive free lunch. Many of these students are immigrants that have lived in the USA for a very short time.
The students that I serve, whether it be new immigrants or students from the USA, have one thing in common; a lack of engaging experiences at a young age. Research shows that disparities in socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds is a big contributor to language delays and reduced vocabularies.
My Project
My students will run a coffee shop for teachers and staff. They will take orders, count money, and use skills that many of us take for granted to communicate. This project will help all of them increase their life skills, but most importantly, will increase their self-confidence. The students will use a coffee urn, cups, cart, creamer, and sugar, to make coffee for teachers and staff.
These simple supplies will help them reach their language, fluency, articulation, voice, and social goals.
They will be able to follow multiple step directions when making, serving, and delivering coffee. They will be able to initiate questions and practice communication turn-taking skills while taking orders and delivering coffee to teachers and staff. They will be able to utilize fluency strategies to decrease the number of stuttering events in a real-world or functional setting.
