My students need Keurig coffee makers and the materials needed to get their coffee shop up and running such as k-cups, disposable cups, gloves, a cart, etc.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have 7 amazing middle school aged students in my self contained classroom. My students are creative, fun, energetic and are on the Autism spectrum. My students struggle with communication, social skills, and functional life skills.
Independence is a huge focus in our classroom.
We have many students that rely on adults for feeding, hygiene, and other everyday tasks. Encouraging students independence is vital to their future success .
My students use communication devices in order to communicate with others. Social interactions are hard, and we are working to expand beyond requesting something they want. Commenting, greeting, and refusing are all skills that my students have to work on.
My Project
The classroom coffee cart business will be used to build communication skills and functional life skills classroom. My students will work on following directions, personal hygiene, taking orders and communicating, organization and much more with this coffee business.
This will require specific materials such as Keurig coffee makers so that students can work independently, carts for delivery to promote further communication, sanitary items such as gloves, and other necessary items to get our business off the ground such as coffee, tea, sugars, and cups.
For my students to learn skills they require frequent repetition of skills. These skills need to be worked on for many years in order to increase their independence in job related skills and overall life skills. My students work so hard everyday on things that come naturally to many others. They struggle with all aspects of learning and socialization. We are working hard on life skills and social skills. These are things that will help them beyond middle school.
This coffee shop would give them hands-on learning outside of our classroom for many of the skills we work on.
