This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Since I am a special needs teacher in an inner city school, I must say that every student is unique in his or her own way. This particular year, I have one who was very shy at the beginning, so much so that she wouldn’t speak to anyone. Over time, she has happily gained confidence and self esteem, and with our encouragement is a member of the cheerleading team. I have another who is so severely autistic that she often runs out of the room when she is displeased with the task at hand. However, she is simultaneously so loveable that she brings in a picture for me every day, which usually indicates that she is sorry for her disruptive behavior. This is the beginning of my mornings. One of my students this year was rescued from the streets, but now has taken an interest in football. I go to his games. I care deeply about each individual who passes through my classroom. Some of them stay for all three years, while others are gone in only a few weeks, due to circumstances beyond their control and mine. All in 8+ hours each day.
My Project
My special needs students are wanting to open a coffee bar to serve the teachers at our school. Running a coffee bar will help my students in so many ways. They will learn how to handle money and make change. They will learn how to make coffee, bagels, and many other breakfast items. They will learn how to serve other people. They will learn about hospitality. Each student will run their own station for a week and then they will rotate so each student will get a chance to learn all the skills needed in order to run each station. We are starting from scratch, so a lot is needed. We have asked for coffee makers, coffee and all the essentials that you would need in order to run a successful coffee bar.
