Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Over the past six years, our students have been working with the Ten80 Student Rover Challenge. Through this association, the students are challenged to create a robot that can travel through a maze among other challenges. Throughout the year, the students compete in business development, engineering design projects, and Rover challenges.
With so many graduating seniors, it is important to start laying the foundation early for the next generation of coders.
To do this, the team has decided to work with 5th grade classrooms around the city of Everett to teach younger students how to code.
Through this experience, we will not only grow as coders ourselves, but we hope to inspire students to continue to learn to code and embrace the STEM fields.
My Project
Every year, our STEM Club is called to compete at the top level with students from around the country. The Rover team develops a new robot every year to complete a variety of challenges.
Our Sphero project is twofold.
First, it helps promote STEM education at the early grades with applicable challenges and coding experience. In turn, this supplies the team with excited STEM students in the coming years to help build the program. Secondly, it challenges our team to think more deeply. To truly learn something, you must be able to teach it!
The Sphero is a small robotic sphere. Students can use their phones to code the robot to complete different tasks. The Sphero is versatile through all age levels as either a simple drag-and-drop interface or back-end coding. It will challenge not only the younger students, but our older students as well.
In addition, this experience will teach our team about social responsibility and leadership. As a teacher, this is my greatest goal.
