Our elementary is one of the smallest schools in our Southern Oregon district and home to just under three hundred students. We currently educate students in grades Kindergarten through fifth grade. At our school, we are faced with a high poverty and homeless population. Our students are dependent upon finding a safe and secure environment here in which they are able to learn. This is often the main place in which they feel at home.
Meeting their mental, physical, emotional, social and academic needs is a constant concern and focus for our staff.
We have limited resources by which to accomplish these important goals.
Our students are curious, inquisitive, engaged and excited about learning. As a school, we strive to meet our students' curiosity and excitement with tools and resources to prepare them for their learning journey. I have 28 innovative and curious students in my fifth-grade classroom.
My Project
We may be a small school, but we have big ideas! Our project will benefit all grade levels and will have a positive impact on each student. Our school-wide grant is a set of coding robots to use with our school Chromebooks.
The coding robots would enhance learning with ALL learners and their technology use of our Chromebooks.
My students use technology every day, and we are ready to advance our skills by applying learning to coding robots. Having these coding robots in my class would be a huge help and would help advance their skills.
We hope to teach numerous students 21st-century skills and then provide them with opportunities to apply these skills. We want students to have positive experiences with technology and not always associate “technology” with testing.
Moreover, many families in our attendance area cannot afford the luxuries of internet service or computers. We would like to give our students access to computers, coding, programs, internet, research and technology for all ten months of the school year.
