I am a passionate believer in empowering student choice in the classroom, and putting them in control of their own learning! In my fourth grade classroom, students are taught procedures and expectations for finding their own path for success and are encouraged to consistently evaluate and modify their own strategies for overcoming challenges. They are tenacious, driven, technology-loving, compassionate and curious problem-solvers!
As Kayla Delzer states, "Problem solvers now, problem solvers later," which is a running motto in my classroom's philosophy.
Students are provided opportunities to identify their own learning profiles in which they understand how they best work and acquire new information. They are encouraged to engage as much as possible in activities that practice content with real-world application, while learning to work with others and use social skill building. Students are not always provided with answers, but rather tools for finding their own answers.
Last, but not least, these 4th-grade students are leaders in the making, and I am excited to see their future. They are highly motivated with inquiry-based learning opportunities and offer unique ideas and perspectives that benefit the school and neighboring community.
My Project
Understanding computer science is a critical component to elementary education. This project will help my students have access to Ozobots to practice coding principles. By having this technology in the classroom, students will tie coding into everyday curriculum including reading, writing and math. Students will use them to retell stories, narratives and math steps to complete complex problems.
In addition to coding and STEM knowledge, students will practice teamwork, growth mindset and grit to better their understanding of computer science and everyday operations.
This will help students become more prepared for career readiness, and hopefully spark a love of science and technology!
