Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have always been a firm believer in the quote, "It takes a village to raise a child." Being a classroom teacher, I am constantly trying to provide my learners with the most beneficial, equitable education experience, as I set the groundwork of their future. These multicultural learners are relying on the aid of a school community to guide them to achieve their full potential, and I have been blessed to have the privilege of being their conductor for this ride.

I have been so fortunate to be a Second grade ENL (English as a New Language) teacher of students who consistently rise to the challenge.

My students come from various nations ranging from Albania, Vietnam, Mexico, Dominican Republic and more. These students began Second grade with very little understanding of the English language and grade level academics. In addition to the language barrier, I have several students with IEPs (Individualized Education Plans) to support academics and several with ADHD who, even with focusing challenges, break all barriers due to their drive to learn. Currently, these little go-getters are working hard to achieve all goals they set their mind to, I know that the sky is the limit.

My Project

Every year, I am blessed with a new group of superheroes. In preparation for welcoming my new bunch, it is only essential for me to incorporate materials that will help these superheroes adjust to their new class, as well as a new grade level.

This year, I am taking the superhero theme and letting my students work in teams to take ownership of their classroom (superhero headquarters).

Studies show that students work best learning from each other. An important component to group learning is assigning the students with designated roles. The students take more pride in their learning, especially when it comes to presenting with their classmates. This year we are having a special emphasis with coding and STEAM to help us be a step closer to college readiness. We are requesting presentation pointers, a coding cat and super hero capes to be superheroes of our school community.

With the pointers, my students will control the interactive board as well as share their work with their classmates. The students will also have the opportunity to show pride in who they are, using materials that show colors that represent them. In addition to these much-needed art supplies, I am requesting a mailbox system to help the students organize their materials and class work. I look forward to having my caped crusaders save the day with their learning successes.
