My first grade classroom is busy, busy, busy from the minute the bell rings until the end of our day. I have twenty-two students: twelve energetic and talkative boys and ten independent and busy little girls. My class is friendly and encouraging to each other. They are happy to be there. They know that when they walk through the door they are loved, protected, and safe.
Our school is 85% free or reduced price lunch program participants.
The school is located in the center of town where there are many low income housing options. We have a high rate of transience. Sometimes kids come to school hungry. We participate in a weekend backpack program. We have students who have lost one or more parent to suicide or other tragedies; parents incarcerated, foster living situations, and/or alcohol/drug abuse. However, there are many young, loving families or single parent families working excessive hours just to get by.
Our staff is unparalleled when it comes to compassion, nurturing, and meeting all needs of our students. When my students are in my classroom, they are treated with dignity and respect. They are treasured. They are loved.
My Project
Our class has recently taken an interest in coding. We have had some demonstrations and have begun to code in first grade! Statistics show that Coding skills are imperative to learn in order to keep up with technology demands. First grader learners are sponges when it comes to science, technology and coding. We would love to have a small group set of six coding robots to explore the many exciting opportunities that coding has to offer.
We would also love to have a small group set of six coding robots.
We would also love to have the additional sets that accompany the Botley Coding Robots.
