My Students

My school serves kindergarten-fifth grade in Idaho. Thirty-six percent of the students are from low-income families. Currently, the school doesn't have extra funding for science curriculum or supplies. When students and teachers don't have access to the necessary tools, it is difficult to meet the demands of the 21st century work force. My students are learning to solve problems with design challenges.

When the school year began, they were looking for the one, right answer.

As we have worked together, many are beginning to revise their thinking to find new and novel ways to solve problems!

As an educator, I encourage out-of-the-box thinking with my students. They have a desire to learn how the world works. With the right tools in their hands, they can do amazing things!

My Project

Building and coding a robot to complete a specific task takes critical thinking, cooperation, communication, and creativity! Opportunities to engage in activities that require the 4 Cs provides students with the chance to exercise the computer science brain muscles. This exercise increases their problem-solving stamina and will have a lasting effect inside and outside the classroom.

Students who engage in coding and robotics gain important skills that will benefit them now and in the future.

As they work together to complete the task, they are faced with failure and the opportunity to redo their thinking. This process, though hard, builds a sense of pride when they finally accomplish the task. With Micro:bit and these building kits, student engagement increases!
