My students need materials to help them explore the world of coding and robotics. LEGO Education and is known to provide exciting tools to get kids into robotics and realize their engineering and tech potential.
Scientists, engineers, mathematicians, inventors these are a few of the titles that I give the students in my classroom as we explore new and exciting topics and concepts. A 2nd grade student is at the age where they start to form their self-identity and confidence, especially within the subjects of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
At this Title I school, over 80% of students are eligible for free/reduced lunch and 32% of students are English Language Learners.
This amazing international school is identified as a multi-cultural global community, that includes Spanish and Mandarin language programs.
In this school, data shows that over half of the 3rd-5th grade population are struggling in math. This can be prevented in earlier grades with more engagement and materials. With the knowledge that there is currently a STEM gender and racial gap, we need to do whatever we can to help each and every student achieve. Like most subjects, in STEM they must first find the excitement and confidence in these subjects at an early age to help them succeed with their dreams.
My Project
It has been such a journey this year so far in the field of STEM in our classroom community. Having more coding/robotic materials in the classroom will allow these students to understand their Engineering and Tech potential in an engaging and academic way. Being in a Title 1 schools, my students don't often receive the same materials or opportunities as schools in a higher economic area.
In my classroom I try to take every opportunity possible to make the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math as exciting as possible.
However, my students need materials that are relevant to them in order to make connections and see themselves in this field.
Osmo kits can be used with a classroom iPad to help students practice and expand on what they're learning in class in a technological way. the Lego Education kits will make a difference in my students learning by engaging them in critical thinking and social skills that they can carry on into their adult lives and education.
