My students need the ability to learn how to code the mouse and then the robot. They are living in a world where coding and computers are an everyday item. My class needs the foundations.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I help to run an after school book check-out program. Students at my school are eager to learn to read, unfortunately they do not have easy access to reading materials at home.
Many of our students come from an economically disadvantaged home where there is a language other than English spoken.
Because of these disadvantages, they may not have the ability to go to the library to check out extra books. Also, they may not have internet access at home to digitally read books.
My Project
In my class we learn through play. We have already taken the first steps towards learning to code. We have made a life size maze that our friends can follow. Now we are ready to teach the "Code and Go Mouse" how to complete the maze and find the cheese.
I would like to finish the year with kids completing the path and coding "Dash the Robot" using and understanding the skills we have learned during the year.
By allowing kids to follow the natural learning progression of using their bodies, then pushing the buttons on the mouse, to finally using the tablet to write the code my class will have a deep understanding of how the process works.
I love that these materials were made for students to use for years. The ability to code and think through a maze is a critical thinking skill that they will carry through life.
