I teach 22 fourth graders who are eager to learn. My classroom is not just a place to learn, it is also a place where my students discover that they are able to change the world through the choices and decisions they make in their lives.
The majority of students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch, meaning they qualify for at least part, if not all, of the cost of their meals to be paid for by the district due to low parent income at home.
Many of my students come from low-income homes and this can negatively impact their ability to learn successfully.
I teach students at all levels - from above level, to on level, to below level. However, they all come to school wanting to learn with positive attitudes about school, no matter what is going on in their lives. They are hard workers who want to do good things with their lives and they know it starts here in the classroom.
My Project
This project will provide a class set of the graphic novel Secret Coders and 6 Sphero Mini Robots. The whole class will read the novel together, and then, hopefully, fall in LOVE with coding. After grabbing their attention with this novel, the goal is to have them decide coding is something they want to try, and that is where the robots come into play.
What could possibly be more fun than CODING ROBOTS?
After reading the novel, I am hoping my students are able to see themselves in the novel they just finished reading, and decide that coding robots is what they can't wait to do! The students will then break into teams, and create a coding program that makes the robot do amazing tricks and activities.
Sometimes, coding is seen as a boy's activity. I am hoping through this novel with a female main character, that my girls will start to show an interest in it as well, and realize coding is something they can do, too, and maybe even decide a career that involves coding is something they want to look into. When students can see themselves within the books they read, it can spark an interest in something they hadn't though of doing before.
