Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide them with skills needed to be successful in future careers. The jobs that will be available to my students will inevitably center around technology.
My students come from a Title I school where 90 percent of our scholars receive free breakfast and lunch.
Our school is also one of the largest schools in Long Beach As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics. Many of my students struggle within the classroom but excel when it comes to hands-on learning through technology. Many of my students do not have access to technology at home.
They are growing and learning in the same urban community that inspired me to be a teacher. They are dreamers, thinkers, talkers, and questioners. They are our future ambassadors, world travelers, scientists, entrepreneurs, teachers... I want to give them a great start.
My Project
I am requesting the opportunity to attend a professional development institute in the area of computer coding. This institute will allow me to gain new strategies for teaching basic coding that I can implement in my classroom. I am confident that the knowledge I will gain from this institute will help me to become an even more effective teacher. The knowledge I will attain from this experience will benefit my students for years to come. In addition, the knowledge and experience I will gain from the intensive institute will allow me to educate my students in skills that they will need in our ever-changing career market.
The knowledge gained from this unique experience will directly impact the life-long career goals of my students.
Many of my students' strengths in computer literacy outweigh their strengths in reading and math. The knowledge gained from this professional development will help me bridge the gap and be able to develop a curriculum that incorporates all academic areas with technology skills.
