Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 21st century learners, who inspire me as a Science teacher to keep them engaged by providing them with authentic STEM learning opportunities. Residing in a low income title 1 school district still recovering from Hurricane Harvey, they lack the means and materials needed to explore the different types of IT opportunities there are but that doesn't stop them from dreaming and seeking out the information. It is my job as their teacher to give them those experiences.
My Project
Through conversations and getting to know you activities, I've discovered that many of my 6th graders are knowledgeable and are interested in coding, gaming design, augmented reality or programming. When I told them about my project goals their faces lit up and willingly gave me their inputs on what to purchase.
My students were born into a digital era where all they know is technology; they need coding, programming and virtual reality materials to engage them with classroom experience and through after school STEM extensions.
My goal is to use these materials to provide students with beginning coding, programming, gaming, augmented reality and design experiences through in class and after school activities and clubs. They just need the tools necessary to soar.
Your donations will go towards the purchasing of Makey Makey invention kits, Dash and Dot kits, Wonder Dash Robots, Sphero kits, Botley the coding Robot, Virtual reality headsets, Code Master Programming Training games, Ozobots, Bit Coding Robots with construction kits, kindle fires with cases to download free coding apps and various instruction books to help guide our learning and challenges.
The materials I have requested will reach a wide range of coding abilities, and will also enhance the learning experience by providing collaboration through writing codes and completing challenges. The Ozobots teaches basic coding to the beginner yet the more advanced student can begin programming it into the computer. The VR headsets are needed to use with augmented reality apps to bring their projects to life.
