I teach at a low-income school. We start at Head Start and continue through second grade. Our classroom consists of 22 five and six-year old students. My students are very energetic and always ready to learn. Most come from low-income homes and depend on the school to provide most meals. Many of our students are being raised by grandparents or other family members, usually on a fixed monthly income. All of our students receive a free breakfast and lunch at school.
My Project
STEM careers are in high demand. Giving students an opportunity to learn coding at an early age will help prepare them for a future in STEM areas. It allows them to become critical thinkers and problem solvers. We use centers in our classroom for ELA and math, so it's only logical to include centers to teach coding.
The materials I chose will give my students an opportunity to explore the world around us with a hands-on experience in coding.
They will get to explore coding, with and without a screen, when using Ozobots. Ozobot will also allow integration of handwriting by using the Ozobot to trace letters written by the students. The coding mouse allows creativity and encourages problem solving. Botley is a great way to introduce coding to our youngest learners.
