Coding for Kids: Playing Your Way Through Problem Solving
My students need Bloxels, Sphero, Osmo Coding Set and Apple iPad minis. The products mentioned will provide a wide range and a balanced approach to coding methods. Exposure to variety enhances student involvement.
Our students were ranked 13th in the state of Wisconsin, out of over 1000 elementary schools, for the 2015-2016 school year. Many students are achieving above grade level. Due to high achievement, I am always looking for instructional resources that enhance my ability to be creative with student engagement, risk taking, goal setting, and problem solving. Vocabulary development along with voracious reading, writing and speaking help our students grow. We believe that all students, regardless of their fall baseline data, deserve to achieve a minimum of one year's growth. We work hard each day to make our best better.
One way that we are working hard to advance the achievement of all of our learners is providing a computer coding club that meets every Friday-over half of the participants are girls.
We had discussions with teachers, the counselor and the principal looking for students that currently are not involved in any extra curricular activities and have a passion for gaming, coding and technology. We also sought out students that find making friends and establishing relationships challenging. Above all, our focus is inclusion of all students that might not have an opportunity to explore technology with an emphasis on computer coding.
My Project
Our students code every Friday morning and during student choice opportunities. Coding is very new in our school! We have a fever! The fever is for more coding! We want playing and computer coding to become contagious at our school. Our goal is to grow our club and to increase the number of opportunities for all of our students to be active participants. Exposure to powerful computer coding problem solving through play is fundamental!
Our wish is to expand our students' access to coding options by providing an eclectic experience.
Our passion is to share our enthusiasm for computer science and coding with our students. Having a variety of platforms will allow us to widen the opportunity to spark that passion. We currently not have access to iPads. We can use the iPads with all coding platform materials requested - Bloxels, Osmo and Sphero. All materials provide different interactive coding experiences. Bloxels is a hands on platform for students to collaborate, build and tell stories through video game creation. Osmo is another way to introduce coding to students. It is a simpler format that will allow our K-2 students in our club a tangible experience with interactive blocks and an iPad. Students will play with blocks and an interactive game. This product inspires confidence in children new to coding. Last, but not least, Darkside by Sphero is an app commanded robot. One wish is to use Darkside by Sphero outside because of it's nubby tire feature. This feature makes this Sphero fun to program due to its ability to read code that commands the robot to a variety of tricks and stunts.
Our coding club members currently have access to free online materials. Overall our wish is to provide a diverse and eclectic coding
