Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 150 motivated students using STEM Lab computers, programs, and robotics equipment. Students were pulled suddenly from these technological learning resources when we went to distance learning at the end of last year and will be looking forward to in-person.
The students are now back and ready to engage with the hands-on technology in our STEM Lab.
With reduced elective choices, students are re-taking STEM Lab. We are revamping to offer a semester of new projects.
For many of the students, STEM Lab is the best part of the school day. It is where they explore a technology in a project of their own choosing. More than half of my students come from low-income households with limited resources. STEM Lab is the only place many students have hands-on access to learn about different technologies.
My Project
We are in a challenging time where students cannot share materials due to our current pandemic. STEM Lab is a place where students learn through hands-on interactions with different technologies. They become deeply engaged in the lessons as they are able to use their growing knowledge to take abstract concepts to build and code their own inventions.
The Makey Makey STEM-Pack kit will allow each student to have an individual kit to engage their creativity and apply their knowledge of circuitry and coding.
The product chosen will allow us to offer students the same opportunity to learn and apply knowledge about electricity and coding circuits that they would have experienced before our current pandemic (which prevents the sharing of supplies). Hands-on interactions with technology changes students' beliefs in their potential and thoughts about their future plans. After working hands-on with a technology, students see themselves as creators instead of users. Their social-emotional well-being is improved as they gain confidence in themselves and their abilities. Please help us continue to provide our students with the opportunity to grow!
