Many of our students come from a farming community. They do not always have a love of reading, and many of them do not know life beyond our beautiful small town.
My students are growing as readers, but I need more STEM and coding books to foster an interest in these careers.
We focus on STEM at our school, and I want my reluctant readers to know that these careers are possible for them. They need strong reading skills to succeed in our technological world, so I am working hard to help them raise their reading levels while instilling a love of reading.
I want to give them all the tools they need to have a happy, successful life. Reading can change their future, but they need to be prepared with the right tools.
My Project
As a STEM school, every teacher tries to focus on these topics as much as possible. I am a reading support teacher, and my main goal is to instill a love of reading, while raising their reading level and giving them strategies to help them in all subjects.
If I have more STEM books in my library with low reading levels and high interest, I can spark a passion in my students.
My students often struggle with the technological language in STEM articles that they read in their core subjects, and I want to help bridge the gap so that they can understand and succeed.
Most of my students are beginning to enjoy reading, but they still struggle with long books or books with a higher reading level. I want to provide fun, interesting books that teach them about coding and other STEM topics so that they can see their potential for a career in these fields. I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade reluctant readers, and I need a wide variety of books to turn them into life-long readers.
