This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Being a library media specialist, I get the honor of teaching every grade level in the school. My students range in age from 5 to 12 years old, and every single one of them breathes life into the library media center.
As a Title I school in southern Florida, the vast majority of my students come from low-income households.
Many students are in foster care or are even forced to battle homelessness. These factors, however, have no effect on the positivity and enthusiasm they bring to the media center. My students are eager to innovate and anxious to become better readers. They adore interacting with technology and would love the opportunity to do it more of it. They are creative problem-solvers and lively conversationalists.
I have never laughed or smiled as much as when I'm in the presence of one of my passionate kindergarten classes. I have never pondered a new perspective or been challenged in my ways of thinking as much as when I'm with my inquisitive fifth graders. Each of my 600+ students crafts a distinct identity with their storytelling, information literacy, and digital citizenship - we just need your help to continue our growth!
My Project
The materials in my shopping cart all work together to provide my students with hands-on coding and engineering experience. Bee Bots and the Code & Go Robot kids will teach my students programming skills without requiring high-tech accessories (iPads, etc.) This is very important, as my budget does not allow for new technology.
I hope that these coding and engineering resources will open my students' eyes to career possibilities they haven't yet considered.
My students are somewhat familiar with sequencing through Code.org, but these hands-on challenges will help them truly understand how their programs are able to come to life.
The blocks, straws, and magnetic tiles all lend to an exploration of engineering. Using the design process, these students will respond to building challenges and participate in inventive problem solving. My students will learn to brainstorm, design, tinker, test, and edit their ideas with these simple building materials. Please help us grow as programmers and engineers!
