Help me give my students a kit that enables them to incorporate art into technology and engineering!

My Students

My students come from neighborhoods that are high in need but low in resources. I work with champions and little troopers from Pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade that are in the hospital. These students are special and an honor to work with. A lot of my students have sickle cell, but I also have students with asthma, diabetes, cancer, and various other conditions. I also have students that are undergoing organ transplants.

Some of my students miss a lot of schools, due to being frequently admitted to the hospital.

Some of my students are not well enough to attend regular school, so they receive schooling in the hospital and in their home. Being in the hospital can be lonely, boring, frustrating, and scary for kids. They miss time with their family and friends, in which they spend days and nights in the hospital. Fortunately, I am able to teach them while they are in the hospital. Students that feel well enough to come to the classroom receive instruction in the classroom. Those that are under isolation precaution procedures are instructed at their bedside.

My Project

I would love to be able to incorporate the Birdbrain Hummingbird Premium Kit into my teaching practice. I researched this kit a lot before making this request. It teaches students about engineering design and computer science, while including art. They can use almost any craft supply to make robots and interactive art. The kit contains lights, sensors, and motors which can be combined with other crafts and pieces of art made or collected by the students, in order to complete a project. My students will be able to learn to code with the technology that was recently funded through previous projects. The possibilities are endless.

One of the main perks is that this BirdBrain Hummingbird Premium kit can be adapted to just about any topic, subject and grade, which is great due to the fact that I teach grades Pre-K to 12th grade.

This kit will reach a lot of students! This kit can be used for students in grades 4-12. BirdBrain also provides lesson plans and tutorials. It is one of the most versatile robotics kits that I have seen. Students add their creative ideas and bring them to life. They can do anything from demonstrating how a knee bends to how the circulatory system functions. They can even demonstrate the make up of animals and interpret texts in literacy through the use of creativity, coding and this kit.

The PhoneSoap XL UV Sanitizer is a station where students can sanitize their laptops and tablets after each use. This is important because my students are hospitalized and it could reduce the risk of spreading germs. This sanitizing machine can kill germs and up to 99% of bacteria in under 10 minutes.
