Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach over 650 students a week in grades K-8 with their own unique characteristics, abilities, and needs, which include bilingual students, English language learners, and special education. All of my students love technology and when they enter my computer lab, I always strive to create lessons that offer engaging, rich media content that addresses multiple learning styles and modalities.
The majority of my students live in an economically disadvantaged community and rely on school for access to computer technology.
Many come from homes with no computers. With your help, we can give these children the opportunity to develop the 21st-century skills needed for college and in-demand careers involving computer science. My students need access to robotics to expand and enhance their beginning coding skills.
My Project
My students will be using Apple's Swift Playgrounds app to learn and explore coding in Swift, a powerful language used to create world-class apps for the App store. Engaging lessons and challenges will help students learn the core concepts of coding by writing real Swift and iOS code in an interactive environment. In Swift Playground, they will create small programs that instantly show results on the code that's written. Playgrounds can be used to control many types of robots, including the Sphero Bolt.
These robots will lay the foundation for computer science and give them the skill set to become innovators of technology.
Interactive lessons that foster communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity will teach the following core coding concepts: commands, functions, parameters, loops, conditional statements, variables, operators, and initialization.
The more opportunities and experiences my students have to engage with technology, the better prepared they will be in our advancing technology-driven world.
