Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Title 1 School in Oakland, CA. My students are part of a pilot STEM program. This program gives our economically disadvantaged students of color from all cultures, areas, and various incomes an opportunity to learn and thrive within the district.
My energetic students enter the classroom ready to learn, discover, and explore.
This will be the first time they ever have the opportunity to delve this deeply into technology. Our school has a 100% free school lunch population, so this brings an unprecedented opportunity to expose them to robots in a fun and productive way.
My Project
I'm introducing my students to the wonders of learning to code with Vex robotics. Now that I've secured a budget robot, I have learned I also need a laptop, as the school only supplies Chromebooks which can't compile or run the code.
This will be the 1st time they've ever coded a robot, and it will bring them great joy to demonstrably prove what coding rock stars they can be.
It will be a joy to witness this tremendous growth in their abilities and self-esteem. As we are all keenly aware of, coding IS the new literacy.
I truly want to thank you donors for helping out such a great cause.
