When I am asked where I teach, I always have the same response.... in the middle of an orchard. My little school is located in the middle of a small rural migrant community. My students come from migrant worker households, from immigrants looking for an education for their children, for a better life. I know that sounds like a cliche to many, but for these families it is real life. I am blessed to be a part of that journey.
While my students are disadvantaged, they have spirit!
We work to create a welcoming and rigorous school atmosphere. Students rise to high expectations and we are always looking for better ways to help them achieve their goals. This can be difficult in a small school. Parents are not able to donated time and money to help fund the "extras" our students need. We often have to look outside our little community for donations. This help is invaluable to our students.
My student are on their way to becoming the next generation of coders. They need hands on resources to make the abstract... real.
Robots will make their learning tangible while engaging their natural tendency to play.
Students will use their foundation of coding to code robots to solve problems, developing their stamina and problem solving abilities. They need to have grit and determination. Engaging them through play will do just that. without knowing it, they will problem solve, work in collaborative groups and increase their stamina. This stamina will cross over into other curriculums, helping them over come obstacles in math, science and language arts.
Coding with the Dash and Dot will provide just that. The Dash and Dot is a robot that moves and responds only to code. Students take what they know about sequence and coding to program these cute friend to play, move and conquer obstacles. While playing, students are engaged, face obstacles of their own, have to resist and problem solve, work collaboratively and stick with a problem.
