PES is a PreK-4th grade monolingual campus with approximately 590 students. My school is a Title I school within a Title I District, which means all of our schools are at 70% or greater living in low economic households and qualifies them for free or reduced lunches. My school specifically is at 72%. Our school's ethnic background is made up of about 40% African American, 36.8% Hispanic, 14.9% Asian, 5% White, 1.9% American Indian, 0.3%Pacific Islander, and 1/2% two or More Races. My classroom is an English as a Second Language classroom, which means that their home language is not primarily English, and this makes us a very diverse classroom.
First-line instruction is solid and continuous in the classroom setting and small pull-out group setting interventions are designed to target specific skills.
All classroom teachers are self-contained. This allows the opportunity for an increased amount of cross-curricular and project-based opportunities to take place in the classrooms. At risk students receive multiple effective interventions to improve their academic performance. The gifted and talented program tests and identifies students to enhance and enrich their knowledge of the curriculum and surpass their academic potential.
My Project
I am asking for these colorful materials (colored pencils, highlighters, Post-It tabs) that will engage students in their interactive student notebooks. Using these colorful materials will not only give them a lively pop of color, but allow them to organize their thinking and be creative in showing their thinking.
"For every minute spent organizing is an hour earned"-Benjamin Franklin.
Every minute I have with my students is carefully planned out, and I am constantly trying to maximize the time I have with my students. Therefore, when students spend 2-3 minutes looking for a specific item in their desk, that time is wasted; and if you add that time for each subject, that adds up to 10-15 minutes a day; or 50-75 minutes a week. So having their thinking in one organized location where students can keep their notes, store visuals and respond to their learning; this would be very beneficial for them as well as for the teacher. Students are constantly making decisions throughout the day, and to make clear decisions, they have to have a clear mind, clear space, and clear objectives. Please help me make a clear organized space to work and to help them reach their objectives.
