Have you ever struggled to understand directions to put together a bookshelf, misread a recipe and put too much of an ingredient in, or read a newspaper article and did understand the main idea? My students have these struggles every day.
My students attend a school that has been given a second chance to succeed.
It is a Title One school with 95% of students qualified for free and reduced lunch. About half of our students are ESL. The majority of our population live high poverty areas.
Despite these adversities, my students come to school every day to learn. They enjoy school and know the teachers at the school really care about their success.
My students are at least two grades below grade level in reading. These students struggle every day to read text and understand the text. They need text at their reading levels to be successful. My state is giving our school a chance to be successful, my individual students deserve the same chance.
My Project
My students work with me (reading specialist) in small groups or individually. Many of the non-fiction selections available are being used by the classroom teachers. My students need "fresh" reading selections at their reading levels to build reading skills, comprehension and self-confidence. The requested materials are books that contain many non-fictions selections; including science and social studies concepts. Starting at their reading levels and scaffolding to grade level material will increase their self-confidence. When my students are confident, they are more willing to accept the challenge of grade level text.
My students will work in small groups and individually to read the non-fiction text, discuss the text, and then answer the higher level questions about the text. They need different selections than those in the classroom to keep their interest high in reading. Then, they can use the skills they develop in the classroom.
Providing alternate non-fiction reading selections for my students will be a wonderful gift.
Knowing that people care about them and their success will motivate them to become better readers.
