The heart of my library and my classroom is my students. Every day I have the privilege of sneaking a peek into the future by working with future doctors, lawyers, presidents, artists, chefs, and homemakers. I get to work with tomorrow's legends on the baseball, soccer, and football fields, too!
My incredibly talented and smart students are in grades PreK to 2, speak several languages, and represent the diversity in our country.
They speak English, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Russian, German, and Chinese. In addition to being their school librarian, I get to work with students needing literacy intervention and enrichment.
I see students in 45-minute or one-hour groups during the pull-out intervention and enrichment blocks for RTI (Response-to-Intervention) and ESL classes. I am the new school librarian and sponsor several of my school's clubs for my students such as Drama, Running, and Random Acts of Kindness Clubs.
My students love learning to read, engaging in STEM activities, and showing their creativity like many of the famous artists we study. More time spent engaged with enjoyable literacy tasks that are matched to their individual learning needs is key to their academic success.
My Project
Our most successful unit of study the last two years in all of my groups (library, enrichment, and ESL) were the months that we learned all about chickens and hatched chicken eggs in the library. This year, children in the upper grades come into library and ask me questions about our school chicks every library class. The first year we had to borrow most of the materials that we used for the project and last year we had a project funded for materials of our own. Unfortunately, the incubator that we used did not have a very good outcome and I would love to get access to a better incubator for developing chick safety.
This project would provide us with an incubator needed to successfully hatch chickens in the library.
