My school is in a city system. Although many people perceive city systems to be composed of families in the middle to upper financial bracket, ours is not the case. The city area where my students are located is categorized as low income. In fact, most of my student population live in government housing. My system does not provide transportation to school; therefore, due to transportation limits per family, the majority of my students walk to school daily.
Many of my students are considered homeless, meaning they move from house to house and are unsure about permanent living conditions.
In society's eye, the ideal student arrives at school ready to learn. That is not the case when considering my students. Many of my students show up at school in order to have their primary needs met....food, clothing, warmth and love. Many teachers would shy away from such a school without all the extra tech gadgets and vast local funding. My school is filled with students who don't have the luxury of knowing where they will sleep every night. I am drawn to these students and desire for them to take that extra step to see what life has to offer.
My Project
My students deserve a place to "shop" for clothes. Due to the economic status of my students, their clothing needs are not always met. I want to build a Clothes Closet with the requested garment racks to allow them to shop without the embarrassment of asking for help.
My project will provide a shopping experience for students in need!
Churches in my area periodically donate clothing items to my school...in boxes! My students deserve a shopping experience...not a yard sale experience.
I want to develop a shopping area with clothes neatly hanging in areas so that students can "shop" without the tag of a socio-economic status. These students can shop alone or with friends without searching through boxes and bags for the items they need most.
