My Students

Some days for my kids are rough. Many come from unstable settings at home, without food security, without their basic needs met. It's a daily struggle.

Big-hearted.

Passionate. Driven.

My students are brave and capable of great accomplishment, but they are often stymied by conditions out of their control. They are leaders in the making, and they want to be in class. Lack of basic resources should not be holding them back, but at the moment, it's tough to engage students when basic needs keep them from making it into the classroom.

My Project

I've started a "Maslow's closet" at school where students in need can get hygiene products or clothes to stay warm. I am hoping now to add meals-on-the-go for those who don't have food at night, warm drinks for the students whose entire day at school can be turned around with a cup of tea and a few moments to decompress from the trauma or chaos of home life, and snacks for the kids who need to stay late for extra help but don't have disposable income for a run to the corner store the sustenance needed for them to focus.

When students aren't focused on hunger, when students come to school knowing they will be cared for, when students understand that their teachers see their struggle, engagement goes up.

And we need our kids to engage more than ever. Getting by just isn't good enough. These kids deserve to focus on their education. For the kids in survival mode, this closet of supplies will grant them the freedom to do that.
