In our school, we are on a learning journey, a journey where we are exploring new people, new places, and new ideas using the best literature we can bring into our classrooms. Our school is made up of four hundred and fifteen students in grades three through five, who are are respectful, responsible, and ready to learn!
Our teachers strive to ignite our students' literacy experience with literature that inspires and engages their young minds.
Our classes are heterogeneous classrooms, many with moderate to severe learning disabilities. We utilize the best teaching strategies to meet the needs of all our students.
My Project
When our project is funded, we will purchase exciting and engaging pieces of literature to further develop our students' comprehension, fluency and love of reading. The texts will support teachers in the area of Close Reading, in an effort to help teachers meet Common Core close reading guidelines and to support students in the ELA classroom. These resources will be used in large whole class lessons, as well as small group instruction. Students will be able to read texts at their reading level that are of high interest. The books that are purchased will be of interest to all students, English Language Learners, high achieving students, and students with disabilities.
Reading should be considered a treasured friend for our students, and we hope to provide them with excellent pieces of literature that will help convey that message.
The pieces of literature we have chosen to support this ELA initiative are texts recommended by Nancy Boyles, a guru of closer reading and author of the book, "Closer Reading, Grades 3-6". The books will be rich in language and illustration, address a variety of standards as presented in the Common Core, and be accessible for all of our school's student population. The specific standards addressed through this literature, including, but are not limited to, character change and development, significance of a setting, figurative language, theme, main idea, and making connections.
