My Students

I teach incredibly wonderful children with special needs (Kindergarten thru 3rd grade). Our students have IEPs with academic goals ranging from identifying letters and numbers to social/emotional goals built around individual mental health needs.

COVID-19 and the imposed mandates surrounding the virus have impacted our students in a variety of negative and positive ways.

The learning gaps are significant but the social/emotional gaps are staggering. It is imperative we meet and service our students' mental health needs/gaps. Learning cannot happen before those basic needs are met.

I am constantly amazed by how resilient and strong our students are. They crave learning in a safe and loving environment. They have positive attitudes and have been able to identify some positive family-centric things that resulted from soft closure as well as some real issues they continue to face.

My Project

The requested materials and games will help provide opportunities for our students to explore, learn, and build relationships with peers. In a small group setting, we will work together to increase and reinforce basic reading and math skills. The COVID-19 pandemic has stolen learning time from children and we are struggling to figure out new ways to plug the holes while meeting IEP goals/objectives. Each student learns differently, has diverse learning styles, and chronological age is not an indicator of skill gaps. Because the mandated quarantining due to COVID-19 exposure continues to cause emotional stress and social anxieties we will continue to teach, learn, and practice social and emotional skills in a safe environment.
