This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Can you remember a picture book from your childhood with characters and themes you still carry with you today?
My diverse inner-city students are enthusiastic learners!
They especially love the reading and language arts block in our daily schedule. Working independently, in small guided groups as well as in project-based inquiry groups, students delve deep into literature to increase their vocabulary and build the comprehension skills necessary for higher level thinking. Unfortunately, the standard stories found in their textbooks rarely motivate them as readers.
We need a carefully culled collection of great books that will keep every child engaged each week based upon the concept of Close Reading!
Classrooms which utilize the close read model have increased student engagement and achievement. A successful close read program is dependent upon quality books which address the grade-level comprehension standards children are expected to attain and more importantly offers characters, stories and themes that become instant classics like the books you remember from your childhood!
My Project
My students love to learn and love to read! We also love to reach our personal goals on our Maps Growth Assessment instrument.
A carefully selected, standards aligned, close-read classroom library will help each student grow in their reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary achievement!
My students struggle in their reading comprehension. A classroom, close-read library is a critical resource that invites students to engage in weekly high-interest literacy activities - each week based upon an age-appropriate picture book. During our daily Language Arts block, these books propel students into independent and group projects incorporating multiple learning styles. Through reading, writing, art and oral presentations, this close read library will take my children on the adventure of their lives and towards high achievement on their standardized testing!
